Exercise Physiology

Accredited Exercise Physiologists are University trained allied health professionals that specialise in and are passionate about the delivery of clinically appropriate exercise to assist with improving general strength and fitness, preventing, improving and managing chronic conditions and injuries, and maximizing movement, flexibility and health. All of our Exercise Physiologists are accredited with Exercise and Sport Science Australia (ESSA) and are required to meet strict accreditation and ongoing professional development requirements.

As well as helping anyone achieve a greater level of strength and fitness, our Exercise Physiologists can assist with the management and prevention of a number of common conditions including:

  • Diabetes
  • Osteoporosis
  • Workplace or motor accident injuries
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Arthritis
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
  • Lower back pain
  • Cancer

At your initial consultation, your Exercise Physiologist will assess your current condition, functional capacity, limitations, strength, mobility and balance. Your Exercise Physiologist will then work with you to develop a treatment and exercise plan to assist you with achieving your goals and get you moving better and feeling better.


 

Strength and Conditioning

Strength and Conditioning services at Physiotas provide an option for anyone looking to improve their strength, fitness, movement and overall condition or their athletic performance. Whatever your Strength and Conditioning needs may be, we can tailor a solution to meet your needs. Your personalized exercise program will be prescribed following an initial assessment to ensure the best outcomes possible. Sessions can be conducted on a one to one basis or you may choose to join one of our Core Performance groups or general Exercise Groups which are a lot of fun!

Improving your strength and fitness levels has a number of benefits. It improves your overall health and ability to perform everyday tasks, reduces your likelihood of injury or many serious health conditions and just generally helps you move better and feel better!

At Physiotas we also offer specialist services for more serious athletes including sport specific strength and conditioning, biomechanical analysis and other injury prevention measures.

Redcord

Redcord is a suspension based exercise training system, designed to challenge the body through multiple planes of motion. With a focus on challenging stability, Redcord can be used to improve sporting performance, assist with injury rehabilitation or assist with improving general strength and fitness. The additional use of the Redcord Axis provides a further challenge to rotational strength and stability, adding an extra challenge to your exercise program. Following an initial assessment, a Redcord exercise program will be developed to be conducted in a personalised setting or in one of our Redcord exercise groups.

Core Performance

Core Performance is our small group (4 people) exercise program with a focus on improving sporting performance. Aimed at athletes of all abilities, our Core performance sessions involve balance, stability and strength training to improve performance, rehab injuries or assist with preventing injuries in the first place. Core Performance sessions involve the use of a range of equipment including our Redcord suspension trainers and Clinical Pilates based equipment. An initial assessment is always performed in order to meet individual needs and goals.

Exercise Groups

Our Exercise Groups offer a great solution for anyone looking to start or continue with an ongoing exercise program in a safe, supervised setting. Whether this be to assist with management of a chronic health condition, rehab an injury, improve your general strength, fitness and health or as a continuation of a physiotherapy led rehabilitation program.

Following an initial assessment, a personalised exercise program will be prescribed for you by one of our Exercise Physiologists. During the Exercise Group you will complete your individual program under the supervision of an Exercise Physiologist.

Parkinsons

Physiotas offers a Parkinson’s Disease Circuit Class, based on scientifically researched specialised exercises to assist with the effective management and treatment of Parkinson’s disease. Our exercise program uses a combination of physical and cognitive activities to drive the brain’s natural ability to rewire itself. The program not only improves motor symptoms but drives neuroplastic change and promotes good exercise behaviour in a fun and social environment giving people hope that there is life after Parkinson’s disease.

Suitability to join the class is based on a number of criteria and will be determined following assessment with an Accredited Exercise Physiologist.

Diabetes

Exercise is well recognised as an important component of the management of both Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes. Exercise plays a role in improving the way that muscles respond to insulin which can assist in the regulation of blood glucose levels. Exercise can also play an important role in the prevention of Type 2 Diabetes.

Physiotas provides a Type 2 Diabetes specific program which also involves an educational component about how Diabetes can be managed. Patients with Type 2 Diabetes may be eligible for Medicare funded group based exercise sessions following a referral from their GP.

Running Biomechanics

Have you ever paid any attention to how you run? Running gait, or how you run, can be an important contributing factor in a range of running related injuries and in running performance. Physiotas provides a detailed Running Gait Assessment and Retraining service to help keep you running well and injury free. During a Running Gait Assessment, your running technique will be assessed using specialised biomechanical analysis software to look for any factors that may require modification. Following assessment, Gait Retraining techniques will then be utilised to assist you with improving your running gait as required. These techniques may involve specific ques together with the use of running specific drills. Follow up assessments will be used as required to assess your progress.

Chronic Disease Care

Exercise is becoming well recognised as an important factor in the management of a range of chronic health conditions. At Physiotas, our Exercise Physiologists are skilled in the delivery of clinically appropriate exercise and health modification counselling. Based on client needs, treatment may involve, clinic or home based exercise program with the option of joining one of our Exercise Groups or continuing on a 1 to 1 basis.
